Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

It's finished!

Did you read my last post? Here is what came next.
The bottom painting is complete. Time to do something with the top.

Old book pages and loose threads collaged on.
All is overpainted with watery green and bronze fluid acrylics.

Gothic "ruin" windows are added over top.

The area around the windows is darkened for contrast.
Circles are added [the colour & shape inspired by our miniature crab apple tree].

A hand-cut stamp is used to add architectural elements.
White connecting lines are added under the windows.

White connecting lines are gone - replaced with one large, soft line.

The large, soft line is collaged over with hand-stamped and painted paper.
[Made in my last Stamps, Stencils & Collage Papers workshop]

And... here is the final piece: "Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other"
A mixed media painting, 36" x 48". It will JUST fit in the MINI Cooper ;)
Next it goes to Ottawa to be juried for the upcoming OMMA
[Ottawa Mixed Media Artists] Art Exhibit: Proverbs, JAN 2014.

A detail shot, including some of the calligraphy.

I have SO enjoyed my time in the studio, trying a new approach to my work.
Thank you Flora Bowley for your inspiration!
And thank you to all of you out there who told me about Flora and her book.

Have a creative weekend everyone!

Enchantment.

I noticed that the theme for the July Challenge over at Artists in Blogland is ENCHANTMENT. I did a post back in June about one of my new paintings of the same name. How cool is that? I thought that called for a re-posting. Make sure to check out the other participants at Artists in Blogland too!

ENCHANTMENT [n. great charm or fascination, captivation, enthrallment]  is an evocative mixed media painting inspired by the interior of a Tithe Barn in Bradford-on-Avon, UK. This piece was started at Karen Rosasco's workshop and I think you will be amazed at how dramatically it changed as I worked on it. I finished it in my studio, all the while marveling at the magical process of creating.

I invite you to explore the evolution of ENCHANTMENT...

charcoal & water "splashed" on paper.
"fixed" with water/gloss medium glaze.

first layers of paint go down.
palette pretty well decided.

painting is getting too representational.
I decide it's time to change direction.

this is more like it.
going abstract with shapes, patterns & lines.

lines, words, focal point added.
watercolour paper glued to canvas.
top & right edge collage elements added.

work continues on the top, right & left edges.

paint ties all the elements together. signature added.

ENCHANTMENT
mixed media, 18"x14"x1.5"
watercolour paper mounted on gallery canvas
$500 CAD

CBC's "Creative Block" explores my creative process.

About a year ago, I was filmed for a segment of CBC's "Creative Block". Today I received an email that the show had been aired on March 18th, 2012. I wish I had known so that I could have watched it at a friend's place. We aren't hooked up to TV here at home! Not to worry - they are sending a DVD of the show, so I'll be able to see how it turned out :)

If you would like to watch a "teaser", click here. Enjoy!

Here is some info about the show:

Creative Block delves into the minds of some of Canada's best singers, musicians, visual artists, designers, spoken word artists, authors, actors, dancers and more – and explores their creative process. The Creative Block community also introduces emerging talent from across the creative landscape.

Creative Block is an international award winning show, hosted by CBC News Ottawa's Lucy van Oldenbarneveld.
